Welcome to 2007 & The Whole Wheat!
As 2007 gets underway, I am going to do an experiment. For 30 days I am cutting out high fructose corn syrup from my diet. This means that if I am not sure – then it is out. I will also be cutting out dextrose and all other forms of sugar chemically derived from corn. I’ll post what I eat each day and any discoveries I make along the way. I also weighed in this morning so we’ll see if there is any effect on weight along the way too. ( this is x-posted to the about page)
January 1: New Year’s Day
I had a cooking bug all day so I went a bit crazy but we have a fridge full of great things to eat this week now:
- huge batch of oatmeal
- carrot ginger soup
- shrimp & pork potstickers
- baked tofu patties (these are full of veggies and are delicious – even Brad likes them!)
- sauted pear with cinnamon
- fresh potato gnocchi
- tarragon tomato sauce
- fresh black eyed peas – if you have never had these fresh they are a real treat!
And my food tracker for the day:
- Breakfast: oatmeal with almond butter, milk, & protein powder
- Lunch: potstickers and tofu patties
- Dinner: gnocchi with tarragon tomato sauce and fresh Dungeness crab, fresh black eyed peas
- Dessert: milk chocolate made only with cane sugar
- Drinks: champagne and red wine
There were a few interesting surprises during the day of cooking as I investigated every item I used for high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
- I had 2 bottles of rice wine vinegar – once contains HFCS, the other does not
- Panko bread crumbs are full of all kinds chemical ingredients. I can’t remember if HFCS was one of them but I know the chemical content startled me enough I opted not to use them.
- Finding a milk chocolate bar made only with cane sugar in our house was quite a treat! Of course that is gone now…
