FOTD: No more Trans-Fat

According to statement released on Thursday, Marriott hotels plans to cut trans fat oil out of its kitchens!

The world’s largest hotel company by revenue said it will no longer use partially hydrogenated oils across all its brands, which include Marriott, Courtyard, Residence Inn and Fairfield Inn. Marriott has already cut the oils from breads, salad dressings, cookies, muffins and other pastries.

Additionally Omni Hotels released a seperate statement saying it plans to cut out trans fat by March 1.

And in somewhat more exciting news, McDonalds has recently selected a new trans-fat free cooking oil though the date they will begin using has not been released. Burger King has also announced they are testing new trans fat free oils for launch next year. Best of all, Wendy’s started using a trans fat free oil back in August 2006!

Although I think many of these restaurants are making the change based on the New York City law that restaurants be trans fat free by July 1, 2007, I still like seeing it. The law actually really bothers me since I think our governement is too big and unruly but THAT is a different topic altogether! From a healthy perspective it is nice to see trans fat free becoming more common!

End of the HFCS Challenge

I wanted to post a little conclusion now that my 30-day challenge has ended.  I haven’t made a mad rush to find any HFCS and injest it – however I did splurge on cookies in a meeting that I *think* only had sugar but I don’t know.

I find I feel better than I have in ages.  The focus I put on fresh veggies has really been good.  I ended up losing about 2 pounds and a couple percentage points of body fat during the 30 days.  Nothing major but as I mentioned yesterday – I found I didn’t have to do a diet over haul to accomplish this chalenge.

I’m getting organized for February and will be back soon with the next month’s focus! If you discovered anything interesting about HFCS – please be sure to post it!
